Meyers Leonard: Use of Antisemitic Slur ‘The Biggest Mistake of My Life’

The professional basketball center in the NBA is contemplating the error that brought him widespread attention and negatively impacted his career.

In a conversation with Eric Nehm of The Athletic, Meyers Leonard, a former center for the Portland Trail Blazers, expressed regret over his use of an antisemitic slur, calling it the biggest mistake of his life. He recently signed a 10-day contract with the Milwaukee Bucks, and reflected on the past two years of his life, which he described as the hardest stretch he had ever experienced as an adult.

Leonard acknowledged that he had made an ignorant mistake and apologized to anyone who was listening. He also mentioned his efforts to show his remorse and make things right within the Jewish community, which he has been involved with for some time.

The incident occurred in March 2021 while Leonard was playing for the Miami Heat. He used an antisemitic slur while livestreaming "Call of Duty" on Twitch, resulting in a $50,000 fine and a one-week suspension. Leonard was subsequently traded to the Oklahoma City Thunder and later waived.

Despite the setback, Leonard has continued to work on his character and has been embraced by the Bucks, with coach Mike Budenholzer praising his high character. Leonard's contract is set to expire on March 3, but he could remain with the team or find himself on the free agent market once again, depending on his performance.
